Life with Braces in Phoenix, AZ

At Butterfly Orthodontics, we are proud to be Arizona's highest rated and most awarded orthodontic office since 1972. Our reputation as such has been built by delivering the absolute highest clinical care to each individual in our practice, one smile at a time. We are an office that always puts the best interest of the patient above anything else.

Adjusting to Life with Braces

Orthodontic treatment requires help from the patient to get to a perfect finish! The most important things that you can do to ensure a great smile is to maintain excellent oral hygiene during treatment and do a great job when instructed to wear elastics (rubber bands). Not wearing elastics well enough is typically why orthodontic results can fall just short of perfect.

Eating with Braces

The most common question we hear from patients is, “What can’t I eat when I have braces?” The short answer is that patients in braces should avoid eating anything that is significantly sticky, crunchy, or hard. In our Phoenix orthodontic office, we provide a full detailed list of all of these items to each of our patients. These items are more likely to break or damage the braces and appliances, which can lead to discomfort, additional appointments, and often extended treatment times.

Brushing and Flossing

Brushing your teeth after each meal is the most important recommendation Dr. Foster gives to our patients. Brushing should be done ideally after each meal and at least three times per day. We recommend Oral-B or Sonicare electric toothbrushes as they typically do a superior job compared to manual toothbrushes. Flossing is best done with floss threaders, which we provide and train each patient how to use, or a Waterpik.

Dealing with Discomfort

Please contact our Phoenix orthodontic office at any time if you experience discomfort or have questions about anything. We have an emergency line available if the call is outside of normal business hours. Typically, a loose or broken bracket is not a true emergency but we still request that you call and let us know so we can plan your next appointment appropriately.
